Charlie wakes at sunrise,
Already on the run—
A streak of black-and-white delight
Who thinks life’s made for fun.
He zigzags through the garden,
A whirl of joyful scenes;
His paws are fueled by pure delight,
That dog is full of beans.
With eyes that spark like starlight
And a tail that spins with glee,
He herds the wind, he herds the clouds—
And sometimes even me.
But when the day is over
And he curls up at my knees,
My wild, beloved border collie
Dreams sweetly… full of beans.
