My first guide dog Goldie was very stubborn.
She was a golden retriever. She was a beautiful dog, but boy did she have a mind of her own.
If we were walking somewhere, and if I took a different route to what she was used to, she’d stop and refuse to walk.
It was hilarious, but annoying if you had to be somewhere in a hurry.
One day I was in the city centre with her. I was on a busy street, she sat down, and refused to budge, I didn’t know why she was refusing to move.
I pulled on her lead, no joy. I tried coaxing her to move, but nope. She was refusing to go anywhere.
Eventually I did get her moving, but after that she got very lazy…refusing to work whenever it suited her.
So I had to retire her early. She was only six when she retired from being a guide dog.
I kept her and she lived to be 13.
She died of a heart attack in 2009. I still think of her and miss her.
