Remember to breathe, my therapist reminds me.
In for 4, out for 7.
I try to do the exercise.
I keep exhaling at the wrong time.
My therapists sits closer to me now.
She holds my hands.
1, 2, 3, 4, 5, exhale, she says to me in a soothing voice.
Finally after much trying I get it.
I do it properly. I am chuffed.
My therapist smiles broadly at me.
I knew you’d master it, she says, squeezing my hand.
You should trust yourself more. I had faith you could master it.
Always the optimist, I say, but really, I am elated.
My therapist knows I can do it, now all I have to do is believe in myself too.
