Question of the day

Do you find practicing self care hard and why? What do you do for self care activities?

For me I find self care to be a challenge. I try hard to do it though even when it seems to be difficult. I find doing some self care things really helps boost my mood and it helps me not to feel so depressed.
How about you?

My hygiene is not F, but I’d say C-. I don’t shower nearly as much as I should, but I brush my teeth often enough. And I comb my hair and put it into a ponytail most of the time, unless I’m lazy around the house.

I go to the gym almost every day for a short workout, and play tennis (way more exercise than the gym, at my skill level) on the weekends with my brother.

Aside from that I don’t care for myself too well. I take my medication as directed. I don’t do much to take care of my soul. Most things are very difficult for me.

I hardly ever know what I need. I have the most useless ability to know I need something without knowing what it is.

It is an issue most of the time, but I try to do my best to take care of myself because just like for you it can really help me feel better sometimes. And although my self care still sucks I think I’ve come a LOONG way with it and have made a huge progress, as I had to actually learn to care for myself again because I had a time in my life when I didn’t care for and about myself almost at all, just the necessary minimum, and I not only have come out of that place and boosted my self-esteem a little bit, or rather gained it, but I’ve also came a little bit further mostly thanks to my Mum and learned to actually enjoy caring for myself, which in turn has made me more caring for and about others. Still though it’s just the beginning.

Sometimes when I’m feeling low I’ll over-indulge in something like ice cream so it becomes more something unhealthy rather than self-care.

I definitely relate to that too! Like, soothing activities or foods or whatever can be good, but you shouldn’t over-indulge.

Eating and showering is as far as my self care gets most days anymore. And blogging I guess could be considered since it lets me get things off my mind. It is very hard because I have so much to take care of for everyone else and my mother to deal with. I don’t do a lot of things when she is around because i do not want to hear from her or fight with her and that is what anything comes to if she is around.

I will answer this question on my own blog tomorrow (or maybe tonight if I still find some energy to do it then). I think this is a really good topic that needs to be discussed more.

I browsed in a really nice hippie shop ion Woodstock NY yesterday called Happylife. The people were great and there was even a Tibetan guy thereat the moment, a wholesaler selling them jewelry and all, and we had a great chat. I bought a couple of low-priced perfumes oils–ten dollars or less–and some healing spray that was even less than that, and I felt like that was good self-care, to make new friends and to get some kind of perfume oil that I liked and feel happy with–I wear them at the same time.

No, it’s in little roll-on bottles and one is amber musk and one is himalayan musk, and together they remind me of a very expensive perfume they used to make in France somewhere that they don’t even make anymore. The brand is not written on the bottle. The other little spray bottle is by milk-and-honey.com which is I think out in California. I like to get little local or handmade things.

As a mother, now grandmother, looking after self tends to come at the bottom of the barrel, but I am learning. Setting healthy boundaries, delegating instead of thinking I should do it all, and cherishing alone time all help.
