Missy’s MAD Challenge # 071 – M.A.D. Works

A forgotten memory stirred deep within the heart of the forest, waiting for the right moment to be uncovered. Beneath towering oaks and whispering pines, the earth held secrets older than names, older than fear. Every dawn, mist curled through the roots like searching fingers, as if the forest itself was trying to remember who it once was.

Elin felt it the moment she crossed the tree line. The air grew heavier, warmer, alive with a quiet pulse that matched her own heartbeat. She had come chasing a rumor—a story her grandmother once told of a village swallowed by green and time—but what she found was something closer, more personal. Each step forward stirred echoes in her mind: laughter around a fire, a promise spoken beneath stars, a goodbye that was never finished.

At the forest’s center stood a stone, cracked and wrapped in moss. When Elin touched it, the memory awakened fully. She saw herself, younger, choosing to leave, choosing to forget so the forest could survive. The sacrifice had worked, but the cost had been her past.

The trees rustled, relieved. Elin smiled through tears, finally whole. Remembering, she understood, was not about returning—but about honoring what had been saved.
