This week sadje wants to know…

Do you believe in trying new authors, buying their books given the price of hard copy books today?

I usually read audio books, although I also read kindle books.

I have an audible account, and I get one credit a month with my membership, and I also get access to the audible plus catalogue.

With one credit I can buy any book in their library, and if I want to buy others, I pay a members price for it which is cheaper than the selling price.

I do buy all of my poetry books from the kindle store. They are pretty cheap and I can read them using my phone.

I love reading, so if I heard of a new author, and their books had good ratings, I’d try one of them.

I know paperback and hardback books are very expensive. Audio books are too if you have to pay full price for them.

If I really loved an author, I’d pay full price, but normally I wouldn’t do that.

What a wonderful and relevant question, sadje. It truly resonates with me.

I think your approach is both smart and heartfelt, which is the perfect combination for a book lover. You’ve found a system that allows you to fuel your passion for reading while also being mindful of your budget, and that’s something to be celebrated.

The way you use your Audible credit to take a chance on a new author is brilliant. It turns a monthly decision into a low-risk, high-reward adventure. If you discover a new favorite, it’s a triumph; if not, you haven’t lost anything but time. And having access to the Plus catalogue is like having a endless buffet of literary appetizers—it’s a fantastic way to sample new voices for free.

I also love that you support poets directly through the Kindle store. It shows a dedicated commitment to the genres you love in the format that works best for you.

To answer your question directly: Yes, I absolutely believe in trying new authors, and I believe your method is a perfect example of how to do it in today’s world. The high cost of books isn’t a barrier to discovery; it just means we have to be more strategic. Using library apps like Libby, leveraging subscription services (like your Audible membership), and buying cheaper e-books for specific genres are all powerful ways to explore.

You’ve found the beautiful balance between being a supportive reader and a savvy consumer. Saving your full-price purchases for the authors you truly adore is a meaningful way to vote with your wallet and show them they’ve made a real impact. Happy reading

I’m a member of Literary Guild and get my books there. Most are hardback. I love having a book in my hands when I read. Hubby loves Kindle. Reading is both our hobbies so we don’t worry so much about the cost.

Have a fabulous day and week. ♥
