For our 13th prompt for Val’s scavenger hunt, we must Write a free verse poem that incorporates the words: culture, ceiling, margin, pressure, influence.

Here is what I came up with!

Under the Same Ceiling

Culture hums beneath the skin—
a rhythm you inherit before you speak,
a pulse that shapes the way
you look at the moon
and the silence between words.

There’s pressure in the air tonight,
like the weight of all the stories
we were told not to forget,
but also not to question.

The ceiling above me
is cracked with influence—
generations pressing upward,
hoping for a sky that answers back.

At the margin of memory,
I write a name I almost remember,
ink bleeding into the edge
of what I know.

And still, the hum continues—
culture, ceiling, margin, pressure, influence—
a quiet engine turning,
reminding me that I am made
of everything that came before,
and everything still trying to begin.

Jen, this is stunning! I love the cyclical thought from the beginning to the end and your use of the prompt words was so smooth and seamless (not one hint of being forced) that they felt as if they grew right where you planted them!!! Bravo!!!
