Missy’s MAD Challenge # 057 – M.A.D. Works
There was once a man who was very old, but he was wise. He lived for a very long time, and he was very happy.
Mostly because nobody else in town remembered how many ridiculous things he’d done when he was younger.
For example, everyone believed he’d invented cheese. He had not. He’d just once forgotten to bring milk in from the barn for three weeks, and when someone found the strange lump in the bucket, he declared, “Behold, my gift to mankind!” They clapped, and somehow the story stuck.
He was also credited with inventing the word “Tuesday.” The truth? He sneezed so violently while trying to announce his friend’s wedding that it came out sounding like “Tuuuuus-dayyy!” and from then on, no one questioned it.
Now, being old and wise, he enjoyed telling stories of his adventures. The problem was, he had outlived everyone who could fact-check him. So when children asked, “How did you get to be so happy?” he’d lean back and say, “Oh, I wrestled a bear once. It taught me inner peace.”
In reality, the “bear” was a very fat sheepdog, and the only inner peace he achieved was after the dog stopped sitting on his chest.
But his greatest wisdom was this: never admit a mistake if people are enjoying it.
So when his neighbor once found him eating an entire cake with a spoon, and asked, “Is that your dinner?” he nodded and replied, “Yes, this is the ancient practice of Cakefasting. It brings long life.”
And from then on, the whole village declared Cakefasting Day once a month.
Which is probably why everyone in that village also lived very long, happy lives.
