Melissa’s Fandango Flash Fiction Challenge #331 – Mom With a Blog
Nestled in a quiet clearing, the cabin stood surrounded by towering evergreens that whispered in the wind. Their needles blanketed the earth like a soft, green carpet, muffling every footstep. The only sounds were the breeze, the occasional call of a raven, and the steady creak of old wood as the cabin breathed with age.
Elena arrived just after dusk, her car crunching over gravel before silence reclaimed the clearing. City-weary and soul-tired, she had rented the cabin for a week—no signal, no deadlines, no distractions. Just the trees, the mountains, and the hush of solitude.
Inside, the cabin smelled of pine and old smoke. A stone fireplace dominated the room, and she lit a fire with trembling fingers, unsure if she was excited or afraid. Shadows danced along the log walls as warmth began to settle in.
Each morning, Elena rose with the light, wrapped in a thick sweater, coffee steaming in her hands as she sat on the porch and watched mist curl through the trees. There was peace here, slow and ancient. The kind that didn’t ask questions, didn’t demand answers.
By the fourth day, she noticed her breath had deepened, her shoulders no longer hunched. She found herself smiling at nothing. Talking to the trees.
On her last night, stars spilled across the sky like shattered glass. The fire crackled low, and Elena sat by the window, whispering, “Thank you.”
And the forest, in its way, whispered back.
