#SLS: changes

This week for song lyric Sunday, the theme is to find a song that was released posthumously
I’m choosing this one by 2pac, enjoy!

### 🎶 **Basic Info**

* **Released:** October 13, 1998 (posthumously)
* **Album:** *Greatest Hits*
* **Recorded:** 1992
* **Producer:** Deon Evans (Big D the Impossible)
* **Sampled Song:** *“The Way It Is”* by Bruce Hornsby and the Range (1986)

### 🧠 **Lyrical Themes**

* **Social Injustice:** The song deals with racism, police brutality, poverty, and the struggles of being Black in America.
* **Hope vs. Hopelessness:** While it addresses many systemic issues, it also reflects Tupac’s longing for change and a better future.
* **Controversial Honesty:** Tupac tackles sensitive issues head-on, including internal community problems, drug addiction, and systemic neglect.

### 🔍 **Notable Lyrics**

> *“I see no changes, wake up in the morning and I ask myself / Is life worth livin’? Should I blast myself?”*
> This line reflects the despair Tupac felt in his environment and sets the tone for the rest of the song.

### 🧬 **Legacy & Impact**

* **Posthumous Success:** Even though it was released after his death (he died in 1996), it became one of Tupac’s most iconic tracks.
* **Political Influence:** The song is often used in documentaries, protests, and discussions about race relations in America.
* **UNESCO Recognition:** The track has been cited in educational settings and human rights contexts for its raw and real portrayal of systemic issues.—

### 🎧 **Sampling & Legal Issues**

* The chorus heavily samples *“The Way It Is”* by Bruce Hornsby. Hornsby **approved the sample** and has expressed admiration for Tupac’s message.
* The backing vocals and production have been altered from the original recording, which was done in 1992 and unreleased until after Tupac’s death.

### 📺 **Music Video**

* The official video is a montage of Tupac’s life, societal issues, and protest footage. Since Tupac had already passed, it serves more as a tribute and visual reflection of his message.

    Sorry, not for me, never a fan of rap. The original is from one of my favourite albums and he should have left it there!

        Bruce Hornsby and the Range, title track of their album The Way It Is. A long time favourite of mine.

        I wouldn’t have expected you to! That album came out in the mid eighties.

    I went with Tupac too. I never got into him until after he passed so anything that made it onto the compilation greatest hits burned into my memory. Great choice.

    I like the part in this song when 2pac sings, “That’s just the way it is”, but the rapping parts are noy my cup of tea.

    Carol Anne, I don’t know Tupac’s story or music, but this is a powerful song and video. Too many young men killing each other on top of all of the other challenges they face in this world.

      I agree, Lisa, he got shot. I believe not sure of his story either, but I like his music. 💛💛
