The jetty

The storm rolled in fast, churning the sea into a frothing beast. Ella clutched her coat tighter, eyes fixed on the jetty where her brother’s boat should have returned. Waves smashed against the weathered planks, spraying salt and fear into the air. A lone gull screamed overhead. Then, through the mist, the faint chug of an engine. The boat appeared, battered but afloat. Relief surged through her as she sprinted down the jetty, arms outstretched. He grinned, soaked and shivering. “Told you I’d make it.” She laughed through tears. The jetty held—just like her hope, against all odds.
