Giving up for lent?

  1. This Wednesday is Ash Wednesday, the first day of the Lenten season. If you observe Lent, what is your voluntary act of penance (e.g. giving up candy)?

I don’t observe lent.

I mean, yes, I am catholic, but no, I don’t practice.

Not as regularly as I should anyway.

Years ago, I’d give up things, like for example one year I gave up sugar in my tea.

I never went back to using sugar in my tea.

I gave up swearing one year.

Another year I gave up chocolate.

Now I don’t give up anything, mainly because I know I probably wouldn’t stick to it.

In high school, I decided I’d take something on, rather than give something up. I said hi to a person I hadn’t before for the 40 days. At the end, I have 3 new friends!

I have a friend who’s a priest, and every year on the last Sunday before Lent, he would talk about how his mother gave up coffee for Lent and it was six weeks of hell for the family. His point was “Don’t make your penance everyone’s penance.” Nowadays they try to emphasize more positive acts, like saying the Rosary every day or adding an extra $5 to the money you give in the offertory during the season, but that’s always up to you.
