For this week’s Friday faithfuls prompt, we’re talking about bikeshedding, which is where you are discussing something trivial too much, and losing sight of what is important.

Bikeshedding – Mindlovemisery’s Menagerie

I had not heard this term before!

I wrote a poem about doing this very thing! Here it is!

In a café corner, beneath the neon glow,

Two friends convene, where the warm breezes blow,

Sipping lattes, their laughter takes flight,

Yet caught in the chatter, they drift from the light.

“Did you see the new show?” one eagerly shares,

While the other nods fervently, lost in their cares.

They dive into dramas, debates on the plot,

What color the hero’s fine jacket was caught.

“Remember that time? Oh, wasn’t it grand?”

As they ponder the memories crafted by hand.

Yet as stories unfurl, like leaves in the breeze,

The weight of the world fades with relative ease.

They chat about weather, the prices of shoes,

The trending topics they can’t seem to lose,

In the tapestry woven of mundane delight,

The fabric of life drifts far out of sight.

But the clock softly ticks, and the shadows grow long,

While whispers of meaning dissolve into song.

Each smile hides sorrows, each joke masks a tear,

In the sea of the trivial, what truth do they fear?

With a sigh, the silence falls heavy and deep,

A glance out the window, where the willow trees weep,

For beyond all the banter, the laughter, the score,

Lies the heart of connection they’re longing for more.

So they pause for a moment, as time holds its breath,

And brush against visions that mock life and death,

In the midst of the trivial, they finally see,

That the sacred and simple is where they should be.

For life is a puzzle, a blend of the small,

Yet in the grand tapestry, it beckons us all—

To venture beyond, to seek and to find,

The weight of the fleeting, and the ties that bind.
