i had planned yesterday to go to my friend normas house to do some training with her. the plan fell through because she was going out with her family, so we rescheduled for this afternoon. so i went to normas house this afternoon to train her in using her i phone.
i showed her how to make a call without using seari, she found it hard using the touch screen to dial in the numbers. i think its gonna take her some time to learn it. she kept getting frustrated today that she wasnt able to follow the instructions i was giving her.
i also transfered a new book onto her phone for her. and i downloaded a few aps onto her phone as well. i was there for over 2 hours.
i think she got a lot out of me being there, at least i hope she did. i enjoyed my time with her. it was nice. i enjoy training her. i find her easy to work with.

training my friend tomorrow

tomorrow afternoon i will go to my friend normas house to train her in using her i phone. it will be our second training session.
she’s doing really well. much better than I’d anticipated. i thought she’d be slow to pick up stuff, but she’s doing well and picking everything up really quickly.
dont get me wrong, i dont mind if she doesnt. i’ve got patience. i’m just surprised that she is, because she does have dispraxia, and other disabilities and they make learning new things harder for her.
remember i said i gave her access to my audible account so she could read some books? she loves it and is reading a ton. i am so glad i decided to do that. she doesnt get out of the house a lot, and she hasnt got many friends, so reading is giving he r something to do when she’s alone.
i’ll be training her for 2 hours. and my transport is payed for which is nice. the cork city partnership i volunteer at is paying for my taxi’s to and from her house. they put it on their account.
i just need to phone her later today to confirm we’re ok for tomorrow.

A relaxed saturday

hi guys
its me carol anne. well my days been very relaxed. i know liz wrote earlier. she is struggling, i’m not though thank god. i’m ok. i’m trying to help liz and others out in our system, as lots of insiders are freaked out and really struggling tonight. anyway. back to today. i woke up at around 8:30. but i didnt get up then, i stayed in bed until around 9:30. got up and ate. then washed my hair. had a nice relaxed morning, went online and also read for a while. then went to my friends in the afternoon. the training went well. i downloaded some books on to her phone for her. i also set up her email account on her phone. i had to reset her password, that took ages. but finally managed to do it. and now things work fine for her and she can check her emails. i downloaded whats ap on her phone for her as well. she wants me to teach her how to use it. i told her i’d think about a good way to teach her. after the training was over we just sat chatting for a while. then i got a taxi back to mom and dads. the taxi company i was using they arent really reliable. they were late both picking me up and collecting me. i cant use a different company as the taxi’s are payed for by the partnership, thats where i volunteer on tuesdays. anyway. i’m happy with how the afternoon went. i came back to mom and dads, and ate a nice fruit salad. i’ve eaten a burger today, but i grilled it so most of the fat came off of it. i know i probably shouldnt have eaten it but well that is what my mom was cooking and i was craving a burger so i just caved. now i’m just reading blogs and checking my email at the same time, i’m going between the two activities. i hope you’ve all had a nice saturday.

Training a friend

Happy Saturday everyone!
i’m heading to my friends house in about half an hour to help her to learn how to use her I phone. I will train her for about an hour. Then we’ll hang out for a while. She’s a newby with her i phone. I hope I’ll be able to teach her, she is not a fast learner, but thats ok. I dont mind. I have patience and can be patient while she learns. I hope she thinks I am a good teacher.
she is blind and has some of the same mental illnesses that I do, depression, anxiety, psychotic symptoms. The fact that we both cant see will I think make it easier for me to teach her.

finishing up one of my modules on the independent living skills course

so I just got some good news! I thought I was way behind on my work experience module, and I found out I am not!
Yay! I am so glad!
I have the majority of the module finished. I just have to write my thank you letter to my employer, and my reflections on my work experience process. I cant do those though until I’ve finished my work experience. I also have to finish the diary I am keeping about my work experience.
I have 7 weeks of my work experience completed now. Cant believe I’ve been there 7 weeks already!
I am meant to do 10 weeks in total.
I will probably do longer if Anita is happy to keep me on. But after 10 weeks I can do the rest of the stuff that i need to do to finish up the module.
There is also a team work exercise that needs to be completed but I cant complete that unless one of my class mates is in to help me because we’re meant to work in teams to do it.
So yeah progress is being made and I am happy!

Training another disabled person

i’m excited to start my new volunteer role today.
I’ll be training another blind woman in how to use her laptop!
I hope I can be a good teacher! I’ve never really taught another blind person, I hope she wont think I go too fast!
I will try to take it very slow. I will just first ask her what she would like to learn, like so then I can maybe taylor the training to the things she’s most interested in learning.
I’m pretty sure she’ll want to learn to use the internet. and she needs to know about the screen reader, like the commands for using it and how to read documents, save them, print them etc.
It will be an interesting two hours!

I am motivated

i went to walk the route to the bus stop with nitro. i came and found noelle one of my tutors at the ILS course and I asked her if she was free to go with me.
she was very surprised. normally i’m not coming to her. normally she’s coming to me asking if i want to do it.
she congratulated me on being so motivated and i felt so good about myself.
we walked the route together, nitro was amazing. he remembered everything about the route. he did so good. and he hadnt practiced it in a few weeks.
i’m so so proud of my boy. and i’m also proud of myself.
