I am taking part in Fandango’s flash fiction challenge this week.
For the visually challenged writer, the photo shows a man riding a bicycle in the bike lane in a large city.
Fred loved riding around the city on his bike. He knew the city very well.
He worked in an office block, right in the midst of the city.
Every day at lunch time he’d ride his bike around for half an hour.
He liked to people watch.
Today, as he rode, he saw some homeless people begging on a street corner.
It made his heart sad. He stopped and decided to go buy them some food and drinks.
When he brought the food and drinks to them, they were very grateful.
He bent down and began talking to them.
Soon he’d been there for over an hour just listening to their stories.
He learned how they’d had traumatic childhoods, been abused, and in care, and that is how they ended up homeless.
He thanked them before he left for opening up to him and they thanked him for buying them food.
Then he went back to work. He was an hour late but he didn’t care. What he’d been doing was way more important than work ever would be.
