  1. In 1972, the company I worked for installed a $5M high tech, computer controled manufacturing system. It was the second one installed by the vendor in the US. I was picked to run it along with two other guys – one guy on each shift. There were some underlying politics that made me want to learn everything I could about the system. I took reams of computer print outs home along with the customer manuals to decode how it worked. By doing so I could make it do things no one else could. The print outs were row after row of hexadecimal numbers…like this:

    AD47 C7F4 BB3E 327A CFCF EC38…

    Each number is a specific instruction, or a piece of data when converted to numbers you and I can read. I spent weeks digging thru this stuff until I knew it inside out. I became the only one in the plant who could get into the code to do things or fix problems. At the time I was 25 years old and pissed at management. I used my knowledge to get things other people couldn’t. Selfish, I know, but I was young and extremely brash then.
