I spent a lot of the day dealing with my daughter’s legal problems. She was out on bail for drug charges, her lawyer said that she was looking at 17 years in prison most likely. He’d been trying to get her into mental health court where she’d likely get out with treatment and sort-of parole. But last week she got caught again, with more serious charges, the first time was dealing, this time they have her for manufacturing drugs as well as dealing. That blows her chance at mental health court. She has no bail now, but thinks she’ll get out next month pending trial. Her lawyer said no way and then demanded $5000 to stay on the case. She’s trying to get us to sell her stuff to get the money, but she grossly overestimates what her possessions are worth. She has five dogs and a huge flock of chickens and wants us to take care of them until she gets out. She has several cars, but they all need more work to repair them than we can get for them. This just won’t sink into her head. It just hasn’t hit her that she’s looking at years in prison. Her uncle, her landlord, is evicting her, which gives us a very tight deadline. We just have a week to get the animals taken care of and sell what we can. I think we’re just going to have to hope we can find some people to take the animals and let her uncle auction off the stuff in the house. She’s totally out of touch with reality. She’s going to have to take a public defender, we don’t have the money to get her a lawyer. She’s pretty much going to lose all of her possessions. Meanwhile, we’re trying to juggle this, along with our real worry that she’s going to spend years in prison. We’re much more concerned about her than her stuff, but she keeps pulling it all back to her stuff.

OMG! I am so, so sorry! This is a huge blow! How old is she? Just know you’ve done all you can for her! I’m sure you and Carla are so worried for her. X

She’s 26. I warned her years ago that drugs would lead to legal problems, I was just thinking of possession, for a long time I had no idea she was one of the biggest sellers in the city. She’s upset with us now that we won’t take out a $5000 to put lawyer on retainer on her second set of charges. She already has a lawyer for the first set (he wants $5000 more to take on her new charges, I assume she used drug money to pay for him). He says that she doesn’t have a chance of getting out of these charges, her best bet is a plea deal, but she won’t hear of it. He says that she’s looking at 17 1/2 years on the first set of charges if she tries to plead innocent. We’re very upset.
