Bee’s Poem of the Day: Break Free

Hello out there, all you lovely people. Lovely to see you here. Are you ready to travel a little? Virtually, of course!

I took some time on Sunday to watch the documentary “Break Free: Two People. Two years. One Dream.” (Please switch on English subtitles) Lena and Ulli from Germany want to travel from Hamburg to South Africa. But they never make it.

It was suggested to me by good old Amazon, and I resisted it for a month. But Sunday was the day ๐Ÿ™‚ . The documentary starts with Marrocco and then goes on to Mauretania and other African countries.

What strikes me most is not the main characters but the people they meet. Poor people who hardly have anything to eat but they are shown to be happy. Happy to have a woman teaching children of divorced women so they can make it into secondary school. Or Hussein who invites the two for camel milk and tea. Drinking tea lasts three hours ๐Ÿ™‚ in Mauretania. And Lena asks herself why she doesn’t invite strangers into her home in Germany.

But there is so much plastic rubbish everywhere. And animals eating in plastic rubbish heaps. It’s awful. Despite this, this film is so worth seeing but i,t’s only available on Amazon Prime I am afraid.

I had one thought time and time again when I was watching it: To me, the call of the muezzin means an exotic dream, travelling and people who are friendly and invite you in no matter what. To many others, it means veiled oppressed women, dangerous religion and terrorism.

How can one thing mean such opposite things to people?

Call of the Muezzin

These smiling faces

are they hiding terror?

These beautiful women

are they suppressed?

This melodic call to prayer

is it a backward step?

This exotic continent

is it our enemy?

Who has the answer?

Happy Tuesday despite everything!

(I also publish these poems on my Weebly blog)
