Recipe of the day. Dixieland chocolate spice cake

Dixieland Chocolate Spice Cake
1/2 cup soft shortening
1 cup sugar
2 egg yolks
2 (1 ounce) squares semi-sweet chocolate, melted
1 1/3 cups sifted all-purpose flour
1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon ground cloves
1/2 teaspoon ground allspice
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
2/3 cup milk
2 egg whites, stiffly beaten
Heat oven to 350 degrees. Cream together shortening and sugar until fluffy. Blend in egg yolks and melted chocolate. Sift together flour, baking powder, salt and spices. Fold in the egg whites. Pour into 2 greased and floured layered cake pans. Bake for 30 to 35 minutes. Frost with lemon icing, if desired.
Makes 16 servings.
