Apples In A Row
1 1/2 cups buttermilk biscuit baking mix
2/3 cup sugar, divided
1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
1/4 teaspoon mace
1 teaspoon cinnamon, divided
1 egg, lightly beaten
Whipping cream
5 tablespoons butter or margarine, melted
4 large cooking apples, pared and thinly sliced
Combine baking mix, 2 tablespoons sugar, nutmeg, mace and 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon. Break egg into measuring cup; beat lightly. Add enough whipping cream to measure 1/2 cup; stir into dry ingredients. Pat a thin layer on the bottom of a 9 inch square baking pan. Brush with 2 1/2 tablespoons butter; sprinkle with 2 tablespoons sugar. Arrange apples in a row on dough; press down slightly. Sprinkle with remaining butter, sugar and cinnamon. Bake at 350 degrees for 40 minutes; cut into squares; serve warm with whipped cream, if desired.
