Question of the day

What is one thing you wish people knew about mental illness?

I wish people knew that we are normal people, just struggling to get by, we just happened to have a mental illness but we are Normal we are not psychopaths and we are not evil.

  1. I wish people knew how to talk to people who struggle with their mental health without giving inane platitudes, “that face” you know the one when they find out and that their magic cures of exercise/eating right/church/getting out of the house etc…are not helpful, we’ve heard them all before.

  2. I wish people knew not to use the language of mental illness so freely as if it applied to everything. She is not “so OCD” because she has some compulsive tendencies and he is not “a psychopath” because he’s done a few irrational and questionable things. It takes away from the experience of people who are really struggling.

  3. My mom has suffered from mental illness most of my adult life. She has attempted suicide multiple times. My wish would be that people understood how mental illness affects loved ones.

  4. My question is: why do people with mental illness get special treatment? We’re all the same, just that some of us have problems with processing information, thinking clearly, understanding reality etc. Why is this so difficult for most people to understand? Mentally ill people just need acceptance just like everybody else.
