What does it mean to have a mental illness?

Having multiple mental illnesses limits my capability. The extent to which coping comes natural doesn’t kick in. It requires work. The effort to minimize the pain pushes me towards resolve. Everyday tasks can be a challenge. The simplest of duty can create such havoc within.

For the most part, having a mental illness is having to balance between reality and a distorted perception. A constant battle in your head telling you should when you shouldn’t and vice versa. Decisions are based on indecision. Collapsing under the slightest pressure dampens your spirit. There are days that breathing becomes labor.

There are numbers that control my life and I have yet to define their meaning. Rituals are performed to keep the anxiety at bay. Ticks that ground me and keep me sane. As sane as possible. Superstitions rule yes or no. It is…
