Expanding my horizons

i had mentoring this morning with colette. we talked about me doing some extra volunteering. not just with the basement club, but with other organisations too. we both decided we’d do some research, to see what is available. i’ve had an incredible afternoon of calling people getting info connecting and networking with people. i called the irish wheelchair association, they provide my PA service. i called their outreach and resource worker and she asked me what kind of volunteering i’d like to do. i said maybe answering the phones like reception work and admin work. she said she’d get back to me in a couple of days. i went on the volunteering cork website and i looked at opportunities. i applied for two. a youth work opportunity working with young people on a creative group project in either arts, dance, leading groups etc. i have to get the info and contact the person yet, i havent got a name to contact yet i just put in my application. i also applied for the friendly call service. friendly call is a service that helps vulnerable people and people who are isolated and also the elderly. the volunteers call people and chat to them about their day and how things are for them. i rang and spoke to a guy named tony, he was very happy to hear from me and said he’d take my name and phone number and email and pass it on to the girl who deals with the volunteering and she’d get back to me in a few days. i also called the national council for the blind to see if they were looking for anyone but to be honest i’m not holding out too much hope. i’ve tried to volunteer with them before without much success. i hope the friendly call and the youth work project both work out. i was going to also apply for big brother big sister, which is a mentoring project for young people, where you’d become someones big brother or big sister and mentor the young person and do things with them each week, activities and fun things to help them socialise. i thought that may be a good idea that maybe they’d have some young person who might have a disability who i could possibly mentor. i still may look into it. so i’m really pleased with myself. i think i’ve accomplished a lot today. here’s hoping i get some good opportunities to volunter and use my skills.

  1. Wow Carol Anne. Go you! You’ve been really proactive in looking for volunteering opportunities. I hope something good turns up for you. Especially after the mess with your job coach. You deserve something good to happen. Xxxx.
