Requesting our therapy records

i’ve requested our therapy notes from two former therapists, Joan, who we saw from March 2007 to October 2011, and Coleen who we saw from August 2003 to September 2005, and we also saw her from November 2011 to April 2013.
I am nervous having done this. Not sure how it will pan out. The email I wrote to them was very general. This is what I said in it.
Hi therapist “insert therapists name”
Its Carol anne here. I hope you are well.

I was wondering, if I could get our therapy notes from you for the time that we worked together?
Id really appreciate copies of them. Do you have typed copies, that you could attach and send to me in an email?
Would appreciate it if you could get back to me on this matter as soon as possible.
Thank you,
carol anne

So yeah, not sure how I feel. I want to see my notes. I feel it is important that I do.
Has anyone ever gotten notes from a therapist? Are they very detailed?

  1. I’ve requested and received my records from a couple of my doctors. One of them I couldn’t read at all, but other one was legible. Reading my doctor’s notes was very upsetting/depressing. Reading the truth can be extremely difficult. My suggestion is to make sure that someone is close by so you can lean on them if necessary.

  2. i too have gotten my records different times from doctors or therapists. while i gobbled up the info, i too found it difficult at times as i did not always agree with what was said in the notes. but i wanted to know what it said even if there were difficult parts.

  3. I don’t know how it is in Ireland but in the States you need to fill out a written consent before they release your records to you and that is usually for a fee. I have gotten records in the past and found inconsistencies throughout. some are detailed but it all depends on the therapist. some are not because they want to be vague and to the point without much detail. hope this helps
