Ultrasound

I got a letter today from the hospital. I need to go in for an ultrasound of my abdomen in a couple of week. this is going to make my ptsd flare up! I am so nervous about it. I don’t want to go in. I feel like canceling it but I wont because it is so hard to get an appointment. but oh boy. people touching me? strangers? undressing in front of strangers? I know they said on the letter it isn’t that invasive but god it feels like it to me! I might ask dr. barry if I can take a Haldol before I have to go in. maybe that will help. I sincerely hope so. my mom is going with me and i’ll probably ask her to stay in the room with me if that’s possible. oh wait, that wont be possible. damn! the scan is an x ray type scan so she wont be able to come in! damn damn damn! the letter said the ultrasound takes between 5 and 30 minutes. i’m not supposed to eat or drink for six hours before the test. i’ll be just glad when its over. my anxiety is through the roof when I think about it!

  1. Hey, try not to worry. Your mum will be able to go in with you and you only need to have the area they want to scan visible. It is just like the ultrasound they give pregnant ladies. They squirt gel on you skin and move the sensor thing over it. They do not need to touch you and you do not need to undress. Hope that helps a bit

      1. If you have loose trousers and a loose top on you can just roll down or pull up. It depends where exactly they want to scan. The gel is cold but it doesn’t hurt altho they do press sometimes with the scanning thing, it is kind of like a ball on a handle

  2. I have had many ultrasounds in my life of different parts of my body. The gel is a little uncomfortable, but the procedure really isn’t that bad. Just try to relax if you can and it will be over before you know it.

  3. Hi Carol anne….We’ve had a zillion ultrasounds above the waist, and it doesn’t hurt at all. Yeah, the gel is kind of gooey and a little cold, but the procedure itself doesn’t hurt at all. It wasn’t really like an X-ray for us. Good luck.

  4. I had one and called and said only a female can do it. I also wore swear pants and just pulled them down. I know it does feel invasive. I asked them to turn the screen to me so I could look at it and that way I was concentrating on the screen which I had no idea what the blobs meant but it helped a little.

  5. I have PTSD and I understand totally what you are going through. My therapist has tried to convince me to see the DR due to pain I have been having and I keep cancelling the appts. I just cant do it. I know it will trigger me into a flashback.
